Funding Models
Section titled “Funding Models”No-cost (most common)
Section titled “No-cost (most common)”Members contribute time, not money. Meeting spaces are free. Tools are on free tiers. This works for most groups.
Member dues
Section titled “Member dues”Small monthly or annual contribution. Works best when there are real costs (dedicated meeting space, premium tools). Keep it low — $5-20/month.
Sponsorship
Section titled “Sponsorship”A local business or organization covers costs in exchange for visibility or access. Be careful not to let sponsors influence the community’s agenda.
Grants
Section titled “Grants”For communities with a civic mission, grants may be available from community foundations, civic organizations, or government programs.
Volunteer exchange
Section titled “Volunteer exchange”Members contribute skills instead of money. A designer creates the website, a developer hosts the tools, a member with office space provides the meeting room.
Principles
Section titled “Principles”- Start free — Don’t introduce money until you have to
- Transparent finances — If you collect money, everyone sees where it goes
- No pay-to-play — Membership should never depend on ability to pay
- Mission alignment — Never accept funding that compromises your values
